As an avid reader of mystery thrillers, I’ve often found myself only partially satisfied with books in this genre. Sometimes, I’ll enjoy the thrilling parts but find myself irritated by unnecessary romantic subplots that distract from the main narrative. Other times, I’m left unsatisfied by endings that feel rushed or don’t tie up all the plot threads convincingly.

No Exit, however, was a refreshing exception that broke this pattern. First and foremost, there were no distracting romantic subplots to take away from the central narrative. Secondly, the ending was nothing short of phenomenal!

This book kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The constant tension and the “Oh my god, what’s going to happen next?” feeling made it an absolute page-turner. And really, what more can a thriller enthusiast ask for?

What Made No Exit Stand Out?

A Protagonist with Spine

One of the first things that struck me about No Exit was Darby’s incredible courage and determination. You can’t have a compelling thriller if the protagonist crumbles under pressure or constantly needs rescuing. Darby was a breath of fresh air – an independent, thinking young woman who was both smart and gritty, with a strong moral compass.

Though she made some mistakes along the way, they felt realistic given her age and inexperience. Never once did I find myself thinking, “God, she’s so dumb!” (a reaction I often have when protagonists make the same mistakes repeatedly without learning).

Darby was different. She took the time to reflect on her actions, leading to some quick but sensible decisions that prevented her from repeating her missteps. This thoughtfulness and adaptability made her an incredibly engaging character to follow.

Twists and Turns You Won't See Coming

The second element that captivated me was the sheer unpredictability of the plot. While I was able to guess one or two twists early on, the story quickly spiraled into a whirlwind of suspense. The twists kept coming, each one more shocking than the last, leaving me feeling as lost and disoriented as if I were caught in the blizzard myself.

Even the ending had a final twist that caught me completely off guard, which I absolutely loved! Taylor Adams‘s ability to weave such intricate and surprising plot twists is a testament to his skill as a storyteller.

Elevating the Ordinary to Extraordinary

Another aspect of the storytelling that I found fascinating was the way Adams elevated everyday objects into integral elements of the plot. A napkin, a nail gun, a car – these seemingly mundane items took on the roles of supporting characters, shaping the narrative in unexpected and thrilling ways.

This clever use of props added an extra layer of depth and intrigue to the story. It was a refreshing approach that I’d love to see more authors embrace.

What Didn't Quite Resonate?

While I thoroughly enjoyed No Exit, there was one element that I found slightly unrealistic: Jay‘s character. As a seven-year-old child who had been sheltered and protected, her unwavering maturity and composure throughout the ordeal felt somewhat unbelievable.

While I understand that some children exhibit maturity beyond their years, it often stems from repeated exposure to challenging circumstances. In Jay’s case, this was seemingly her first encounter with such a harrowing situation, yet she remained remarkably calm and collected, even engaging in adult-like conversations and making sound decisions under extreme stress.

This level of composure in a child of her age, especially given the traumatic circumstances, felt a bit too far-fetched for me.

Additionally, while Darby’s character was captivating, none of the other characters left a lasting impression. However, this is understandable in a thriller where the plot takes center stage. The author’s masterful handling of suspense overshadowed the character development, so I’m willing to overlook this minor flaw.

Conclusion

No Exit is a book that I’m likely to revisit, even if it’s just to marvel at the intricate plot and search for any hidden clues I might have missed. This story has all the ingredients for a blockbuster film adaptation! The setting – the desolate, snow-covered mountains of Colorado – provides a chilling backdrop for the action. The characters – a determined heroine, a terrified child, and a monstrous villain – offer a compelling dynamic. It’s exciting to see that it’s already been brought to life on screen as a movie in 2022.
