Can a thriller captivate you even when the killer’s identity is revealed from the start?
If you think mysteries are all about “whodunit,” think again! The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino defies conventional mystery tropes, proving that the journey from crime to resolution can be even more thrilling when we know the “who” from the beginning. As Tetsuya Ishigami says: “The question is not whether you can solve a problem, but whether you can create one that cannot be solved.“
This quote captures the essence of Higashino’s masterpiece, where the suspense lies not in the criminal’s identity but in the tension and mind games that follow. With over 2 million copies sold in Japan and translations in over 25 countries, The Devotion of Suspect X has turned foreknowledge into a source of suspense rather than a spoiler.
Beyond Just Another Mystery
Most thrillers play a cunning game of hide-and-seek with their readers, carefully concealing the criminal’s identity. The Devotion of Suspect X, authored by Keigo Higashino, takes a boldly different path. Standing as the most widely translated Japanese mystery novel of the last decade, it shows its cards early – then proves this apparent transparency creates an even more gripping tale.
Since its English translation in 2011, this masterpiece of psychological warfare has inspired multiple adaptations, including Drishyam (Malayalam) and Kolaigaran (Tamil). Yes, I’m late to this party, but sometimes the best guests arrive fashionishly late!
The Story That Started It All
“Sometimes distance was the only way to find peace.” This simple yet profound statement sets the tone for our story. Yasuko, a single mother working at a Tokyo bento shop, has built a peaceful life with her teenage daughter. When her abusive ex-husband appears at their doorstep unannounced, their carefully constructed world shatters in a single evening! What follows is a death that brings Detective Kusanagi to their door.
But unlike traditional mysteries, we witness every detail of the crime. The real intrigue? Watching an intricate battle of intellects unfold as the detective faces his most baffling case yet.

Why This Book Had Me Hooked?
A Revolutionary Approach to Suspense
If traditional thrillers are like hairpin bends on a treacherous mountain road, this novel is like a train journey on a seabed bridge! The vast ocean surrounding you creates its own kind of tension – it’s not about surprise, but about watching the inevitable unfold.
Higashino employs an approach that’s rare in crime fiction: revealing the murderer’s identity almost immediately. By shifting our focus from “Who did it?” (whodunnit) to “how will you catch them?” (howcatchem), he transforms each character interaction into a chess move in a high-stakes psychological game. (If you enjoy strategic mind games in literature, check out my review of The Chess Story, another masterpiece of psychological tension!)
As Tetsuya Ishigami notes, “Sometimes the simplest explanations are the most complicated to understand.” This masterful storytelling demonstrates how knowing the truth from the start can make a mystery even more captivating.
The Japanese Thriller Experience

This isn’t a fast-food thriller writing with cheap thrills. Like a perfectly crafted game of Go, each move builds upon the last, creating layers of strategy and meaning. (For another brilliant example of Japanese psychological thrillers, dive into my review of Confessions by Kanae Minato.) A younger me might have found this pace yawn-inducing, but now? I’m captivated by how Higashino turns apparent clarity into deepening mystery.
Precision Storytelling at Its Finest
“A feeling rose inside him, making him queasy, as though an elaborate formula he’d thought was perfect was now giving false results because of an unpredictable variable.” This perfectly describes how the author handles his plot – every word, every scene, every dialogue serves a purpose. There’s no fluff, no unnecessary romantic subplots (looking at you, thriller movies with random dance numbers!), just pure, focused storytelling.
A Masterclass in Motive Development
“In the end, we are all just searching for someone who sees everything in us and accepts it.” This quote takes on deeper meaning as the story progresses. By showing us the crime early, Higashino shifts our focus from ‘who’ to ‘why’, transforming what initially seems like a simple motive into something profoundly complex and human!
The One Thing That Made Me Think
(Mild Spoiler Alert!)
“Love is the strongest weapon against any betrayal.” This quote haunts me as I ponder the one aspect that still puzzles me – why did the criminal surrender? After executing such a brilliant plan, why choose to face consequences? The answer perhaps lies in the psychological depth this format allows – when we know the ‘who’ from the start, we have space to explore the complex human reasons behind every choice!
The Verdict
This book impressed me so much that I immediately picked up Higashino’s Malice afterward (stay tuned for that review!). Even more impressive? My fiction-resistant husband, who considers books the perfect cure for insomnia (10 minutes flat, sleep guaranteed!), devoured this one in two days straight. If that’s not a miracle, I don’t know what is!
